The Bougainville Island Melomys is a medium-sized rodent described from Bougainville Island. It has reddish yellow-brown upper fur and a pale underside. The original author inferred a more arboreal tendency from its feet and tail.
It is medium-sized with broad feet and bright yellowish-red to russet-brown back fur. The cheeks, lower sides, and limbs have a pinkish-cinnamon wash, while the throat and underside are ivory or buffy white.
From its broad feet, mobile strongly clawed digits, and up-curled prehensile tail tip, the original author suggested a more exclusively arboreal existence than in mainland Melomys.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
