The variable pocket gopher lives in the mountains of Costa Rica and spends most of its life underground. Its back is gray-brown, its underside is pale, and roots and tubers make up most of its diet.
Its fur is thick and fairly long, gray-brown above and pale gray below. Long claws, reduced eyes and ears, and a flattened skull are adaptations for living underground.
It is usually solitary and spends nearly all its time underground, emerging to forage or dig a new burrow. Grass roots and tubers make up most of its food.
