This ground-dwelling bird occurs along the Pacific side from southwestern Ecuador to northwestern Peru. Its pale brow and barred back help identify it.
It is brown, with grey tones on the neck and breast, a pale brow and white throat, dark bars across the back and wings, and red legs. Males are brighter than females.
It is active by day and lives on the ground, using deciduous forest and woodland as well as regenerating scrub in some places. It eats both plant and animal foods.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
