The short-tailed chinchilla is a high-altitude rodent with dense fur. It hides in rock crevices or burrows by day and eats grasses and seeds around dusk and at night.
It has a stocky body and dense silver-gray to lightly brownish-gray fur. The short tail carries abundant hairs that are longer and stiffer than the body fur, while the belly and legs are whitish.
It is active at dusk and at night, resting by day in rock crevices or burrows. It lives in groups or colonies and uses dust baths to maintain its thick coat.
