This summer visitor breeds only in Japan, using moist woodland edges and scrub. A male's yellow-green head and the white eye ring of both sexes help identify it.
In breeding season, the male has a grayish yellow-green head and a dark area before the eye; both sexes have a white eye ring. Females are browner overall, and nonbreeding males become duller.
It breeds along moist woodland edges and in scrub in Japan's lower mountains. It eats grass seeds and catches insects during breeding, including insects fed to its young.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
