The Bateleur is a raptor with striking black and white plumage, a red-orange face and legs, and a short tail. It occurs in South Africa’s bushveld and arid Kalahari.
The sexes are easiest to tell apart by the underwing pattern in flight. Males have black inner flight feathers, while females have broad white bases to those feathers.
It soars above African bushveld with a rocking, gliding motion and also scavenges animal carcasses.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
