The Black-tailed Gerbil can be identified by a tail that is dark on both its upper and lower surfaces. It occurs in dry East African savannas, with a patchy distribution in some areas.
The tail is dark above and below, a feature used to distinguish it from related gerbils.
It is recorded in dry savanna woodlands and grasslands. In Kenya it is widespread but occurs patchily.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
