Peale's dolphin occurs along the cold-temperate coast of southern South America. A study in the Strait of Magellan documented animals in a bay with kelp beds. The Mammal Diversity Database currently lists Cephalorhynchus australis and records Lagenorhynchus australis as an earlier name.
Approximately behind the level of the eyes, the lower lips, chin and throat are black. The flank patch is simple, and white pigmentation from the belly extends into the inner base of the flippers.
An acoustic and visual study published in 2025 monitored a local group along the cold-temperate coast of the Strait of Magellan. The surveyed bay included kelp beds.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
