The Pyrrhuloxia lives in dry scrub from the southwestern United States into northern Mexico. Its reddish plumage and stout bill are distinctive, and it searches the ground for seeds and cactus fruit.
The male is gray with red on the face, crest, and breast, and has a short, thick yellow bill. The female is browner overall and has less of the male's red coloring.
It walks on the ground to take seeds and insects, and also eats cactus fruit. It may form flocks in winter.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
