The 14–15 cm Amazonian Pygmy Owl lives in the canopy of primary tropical forest across much of Amazonia. It is partly active by day; one nest in French Guiana was in an old woodpecker hole.
It is about 14–15 cm long, with a short tail and long, round-tipped wings. The crown and nape are grayer than the brown back, and the nape has a marked pattern that resembles false eyes.
The species is partly diurnal. At one nest observed in French Guiana, adults used an old woodpecker hole about 25 m above the ground in a dead tree and brought a small bird and a cicada to the young.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
