This parrot lives in forests on Indonesian islands, including the Moluccas. The six subspecies differ in plumage.
In the nominate subspecies, adults have a red head and underparts, a violet-blue mantle and upper tail coverts, and green wings.
It is usually seen in pairs or small groups and stays among dense foliage.
