This babbler was described from Nonggang Nature Reserve in southwest China and depends on limestone forest. Its confirmed known range is restricted; northern Vietnam is discussed as a possible area, not confirmed range.
The body is dark grey-brown, with dark spots on the white throat and upper breast. A white crescent-shaped patch lies behind the ear-coverts, and the bill is black. The sexes are similar in color.
It searches for insects and other arthropods by turning fallen leaves in gaps between limestone rocks. It often walks on rocks and usually flies only short distances when startled. Pairs were seen in the breeding period, but no nest had been found in the original study.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
