This large woodpecker lives west of the Andes. It has a white V on its black back and searches for food under tree bark.
It has a scarlet crest and a white V-shaped mark across its black back. The underside is yellow-brown with dark bars; a male has a black-and-white spot in the red crest.
It climbs tree trunks and chisels under bark while foraging. Pairs may work the same tree for a long time. Beetle larvae are suggested as food, but the full diet is not well known.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
