The Northern Puffback is widespread south of the Sahara. Females have loose rump feathers that they puff up, grey rump and shoulders, and orange-red eyes. It searches woodland and thickets for insects and plant buds.
Females puff up the loose feathers on the lower back. The underparts are dull white, the rump and scapulars grey, and the eyes orange-red.
It feeds on caterpillars, grasshoppers, beetles, other insects, and plant buds in savanna woodland, mangroves, bamboo groves, and thickets.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
