This high-elevation rat from southwestern China is one member of the Niviventer andersoni species complex. The study found lineages associated with different mountain regions.
In the seven N. excelsior specimens measured in the study, the tail was longer than the head and body together.
The species is included in a complex adapted to middle and high elevations, and the paper describes N. excelsior as an alpine inhabitant.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
