The Greater Short-toed Lark is a small lark of open, dry country. A breeding study in central Italy recorded nesting, groups of fledglings, and family groups before migration.
Its upperparts are sandy brown with darker streaks, and its underside is whitish. It has a pale eyebrow-like stripe and no crest.
In a 2018–2022 breeding study at Fano airfield in central Italy, young birds were seen helping feed a second brood, and groups containing birds beyond the family formed before migration.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
India’s 2025 State of India’s Birds factsheet lists the Greater Short-toed Lark’s long-term trend as decline, its current annual trend as inconclusive, and its conservation priority as moderate. It classifies the species as an open-habitat specialist.
