This large parrot has a red body and green wings. Its head is black with a purple gloss, and its thighs and lower abdomen are blue-purple. It feeds on flowers and fruit in the mid-canopy.
Adults are mostly red, with a black head glossed purple, green wings, and blue-purple thighs and lower abdomen. The bill is coral red and the cere is white.
It occurs alone, in pairs, or in small groups of up to 20, feeding in the mid-canopy on fruit, flowers, and coconut blossoms or tiny fruits.
