The Clapper Rail is a large rail of salt marshes and mangroves in eastern North America, the Caribbean, and northeastern Central America. Its chestnut-and-gray body stays hidden among marsh grasses as it searches along mudflat edges.
Its body is chestnut and gray. This large rail often appears only briefly before disappearing into dense marsh grass.
It eats locally available prey and plant matter, including crabs, crustaceans, fish, and eggs. It gleans along marsh edges and probes shallowly into the ground. Its bulky grass nest may have an entry ramp where tides change water levels.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
