MDD lists Gallagher's Free-tailed Bat as Mops gallagheri. A 2025 study placed it in the new subgenus Ornatomops, provisionally within Mops; relationships among free-tailed bats are still being resolved.
The male type specimen has a prominent rounded band between the ears that bulges forward over the muzzle. The skull bears unusual swellings around the nose. The specimen has brown fur and uniformly greyish, relatively opaque wing membranes.
Natural history remains poorly known. The 2025 study reports that both species it examined were caught in rainforest, including this species. The authors suggest the bats may depend on rainforest, but that is an inference; diet, daily activity and roost use remain unknown.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
