Adult males of the nominate subspecies have an olive-brown crown, blue rump, and red outer tail. Females have paler shoulder feathers and a green band on the tail, while the subspecies viridiceps has a green crown.
It eats fruit and other plant foods and moves in small groups through the canopy. The profile describes most foraging in the upper forest, with occasional feeding in lower shrubs.
