It has an olive back, bright yellow breast, and a gray face with white spectacles and a white mustache stripe. Birds breeding west of the western Great Plains and West Texas have a longer stripe than eastern birds.
During the spring breeding season, males may sing from exposed perches with whistles and chuckling notes. At other times both sexes tend to hide in thickets and eat insects, spiders, and fruit.
