This migratory bird lives in the grasslands of southern South America. Its breeding range includes Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and southern Brazil; after breeding it moves north to central Brazil and other areas.
In breeding plumage, males are mainly chestnut with a gray cap, wings, and tail. Females are uniformly dull brownish.
It inhabits tall grasslands of the Pampas, including sites near wet swales and marshy areas. A study monitored 70 adults at two southern Brazil sites over four breeding seasons; nests were commonly in dense, tall vegetation.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
