This shrew is recorded at scattered localities across Kenya and in central and southern Somalia. In southern Kenya it lives in dry Acacia savanna, and a female was also collected at Moroto in Uganda.
Measurements for the type and Moroto material give a head-and-body length of 81 mm and a tail of 36–38 mm. The tail is roughly half the head-and-body length.
In southern Kenya at about 800 m, it is recorded in dry Acacia savanna interspersed with Themeda, Hyparrhenia, and Cenchrus grasses. It is terrestrial. At Mitubiri, a Kenyan survey recorded one female in grass-and-bush habitat. At Moroto, Uganda, an adult female was collected on 17 May 1993.
