The Hooded Pitohui lives in forests on New Guinea and Yapen Island. Its black head, wings, and tail contrast with its rufous-brown body.
It is about 22–23 cm long. The head, chin, throat, upper breast, wings, and tail are black, while the back and belly are rufous-chestnut. The sexes are similar.
It lives in forest and secondary growth, and eats mainly fruit along with some insects. A 1992 study detected a toxic substance in the feathers and muscle of specimens examined.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
