This chachalaca occurs in lowland northeastern Brazil south of the Amazon. A pale eyebrow and chestnut outer tail feathers help distinguish it.
It is about 42 cm long. A pale eyebrow is prominent; the outer tail feathers are chestnut, while the central feathers are brownish olive.
Buff-browed Chachalacas use forest edges and regrowth in Brazil, including seasonally deciduous forest observed by Oren in Maranhão.
Goeldi Museum specimens from1978 and1984 document localities west of the Tocantins River. Both collection sites were later submerged by the Tucuruí hydroelectric reservoir, preserving records of land now under water.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
Oren’s2006 assessment identified habitat loss and fragmentation from logging, mining, agriculture and charcoal production, alongside hunting. It recommended securing protected forests and surveying distribution limits.
