The Okinawa spiny rat is a native rodent of forests in northern Okinawa Island. Stiff hairs on its back and a varied diet are notable.
Stiff, spine-like hairs are mixed among the softer, dark body fur, especially along the back.
It has been reported to eat chinquapin and pine seeds, insects and crustaceans.
