This locally distributed bushshrike is known from forests on Mount Kupe and the Bakossi Mountains. It has also been recorded in Nigeria's Cross River National Park; a 2019 observation paper reported the first photographs there.
Field marks include a black mask, white throat, gray breast and belly, yellow vent, and olive-green back. One photographed bird had a black necklace; another lacked the neck marking.
It uses middle levels of montane forest and gleans invertebrates in trees. In Nigeria, birds in pristine montane forest with a dense canopy and open understory responded to playback with calls and moved back into the canopy.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
