The Fynbos Buttonquail is a small, terrestrial bird of South Africa's fynbos. Females have a chestnut-red face and breast with a white belly, while males are generally drab.
It is about 14–16 cm long. Males are generally drab, while females have chestnut or reddish-brown on the face and breast and a contrasting white belly. The neck, breast and belly have black spots or barring, and the legs are yellow.
It walks through low, relatively sparse fynbos vegetation while searching for food. When disturbed it tends to run through the grass and hide. It eats invertebrates and seeds and is difficult to flush.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
