This porcupine lives on islands in the Palawan region and has dark bristles and rattling tail quills.
Its stocky body is dark brown to black with pale speckles; hollow quills on the tail rattle.
It is nocturnal and usually solitary, denning in rock crevices or beneath tree buttresses. When threatened, it raises its quills.
