This crow is recorded from southern peninsular India and Sri Lanka. ITIS, citing the IOC checklist, lists it as a species, while Clements 2024 keeps it among the subspecies of the Large-billed Crow. This entry describes the southern form in an older regional account.
An older South Asian bird account describes the southern form as smaller than the form it compares it with, with a more slender bill. It says the feather bases are nearly always dark in adults, as in young birds.
The same account describes the southern form as more closely associated with jungle than the form it compares it with. It also records it in well-forested coastal areas of Sri Lanka.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
