The Vieillot's Black Weaver lives along forest edges and in grassland in western and central Africa. Plumage differs by sex and subspecies, and birds may forage in flocks.
Male plumage differs between subspecies: P. n. nigerrimus is black, while P. n. castaneofuscus has brown areas. Females are duller than males.
It occurs along forest edges, in open woodland, tall-grass savanna, and around villages. It eats insects, seeds, and fruit, and may forage in flocks.
Males of the nominate subspecies have black bills and yellow eyes.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
