The Afghan Urial ranges from Afghanistan and Pakistan to northeastern Iran, southern Turkmenistan, and western Kazakhstan. Both sexes have a white rump patch below the tail base, and males' winter coat markings vary among regions.
Both sexes have a clearly defined white rump patch restricted to below the tail base. The back of the hindquarters and the lower legs from the knees to the hooves are usually white. Male winter coats vary by region: those in northeastern Iran and southern Turkmenistan lack a saddle patch, while eastern populations usually have one of variable size.
At lower elevations it uses rounded, broken mountain terrain and readily enters steep terrain for escape cover. It feeds on grasses and shrubs. Habitats range from near sea level to above 3,000 m, but rarely exceed 4,000 m; in southern Pakistan it also occurs in mountain ranges below 1,200 m.
