This rosefinch occurs in China's highlands. Species data describe shrubland and semi-open habitat at high elevation; a historical adult-male account records a silvery forehead and throat and rosy cheeks.
A 1894 specimen account describes the adult male with a silvery forehead and throat, rosy cheeks, a white mark near the end of the eyebrow stripe and pink-edged wing-coverts.
Current species data place it in shrubland and semi-open habitats at about 2,400–4,600 m and classify it as partially migratory, including altitudinal movement. Conflicting diet fields are not reproduced.
