The Agami Heron is a tropical heron with a long neck and bill and a chestnut belly. During breeding, blue crest and back plumes grow longer, and the bird hunts fish at the water's edge.
It has an elongated neck and bill, chestnut belly, and grayish neck. In breeding plumage it grows long pale-blue crest feathers and ornamental plumes on the back.
It walks slowly in shallow water and crouches on banks or overhanging branches to strike at prey. Fish are its main food.
It nests colonially in places such as trees standing in water and isolated clumps of mangroves. The nest is a thick platform of sticks or twigs with a deep central cup.
Immature birds are drab brown above, with a darker crown and back. Their whitish underparts have black streaking and buff on the lower breast.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
