This short-tailed shrew ranges from southern Canada into eastern and central parts of the United States. It is most numerous in damp woods and wetlands and makes runways close to the ground.
Its fur is soft and velvety, almost uniformly slate gray, with slightly paler underparts.
It reaches its highest densities in damp brushy woods, bogs, marshes, and weedy field edges, and builds runways beneath leaves, soil, and snow.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
