A pale-pink flamingo of South American coasts and high-altitude lakes. It filters tiny food particles from shallow water.
The plumage is pale pink. The ankle joints halfway along the visible legs and the webbed feet are red; the rest of the legs are grey.
Chilean Flamingos use shallow South American wetlands. At Edinburgh Zoo, a chick hatched on 4 September 2025, the first in nine years.
Keepers incubated the egg while a dummy egg supported the parents’ nesting behaviour, then returned the egg to the nest as the chick began breaking through its shell. The zoo’s species page records two chicks born in 2025.
Wild breeding faces egg collection and habitat changes. Water abstraction and changing salinity are threats at Argentina’s Mar Chiquita lake, linking nesting opportunities with wetland conditions.
IUCN Red List (conservation institution account) · Near Threatened · Global
Egg collection, habitat alteration and disturbance are pressures. Maintaining breeding wetlands and habitats used during seasonal movements supports both reproduction and survival.
