The Northern Red Bishop changes markedly in the male's breeding plumage. Flocks feed mainly on seeds in wet grasslands and marshes.
A breeding male has a black head and chest with a red or orange back. Females and males outside breeding plumage are brownish, with a pale line above the eye.
It feeds on seeds in large flocks and eats more insects during the breeding season. At night, birds may gather in wetland reedbeds to roost.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
