This red-backed vole occurs in Japan. It is recorded in shady, moist rocky places and cultivated areas; where it overlaps with Smith’s red-backed vole, it is more common at higher elevations.
The dorsal fur is rusty brown or buff-brown, and the belly is yellowish gray-brown. Its tail is long, about 48–68% of head-and-body length.
It is recorded in shady, mesic rocky habitats and cultivated areas. Where it occurs with Smith’s red-backed vole, it mainly occupies sites above 400 m, but it also occurs in lowlands where Smith’s vole is absent.
