This is an arboreal spiny rat recorded in the Peruvian Amazon. A live animal captured near Iquitos showed pale cream patches behind its ears.
A live T. rhipidurus captured near Iquitos had cream-colored patches behind the ears. The authors note that these patches are not visible on most museum skins.
The 2018 review places Toromys among South American arboreal echimyids. It does not give a detailed diet or behavior account for this species.
