A mole of eastern North American wetlands and watersides that searches for prey with its star-shaped nose.
Star-shaped rays ring its nose. Its short, waterproof fur is dark brown-black on top and lighter on the belly, and its large forepaws are adapted for digging.
It digs underground tunnels and also searches for prey underwater. Its food includes worms, aquatic insects and crustaceans.
