Petter's tateril has a tan to light reddish-brown back, orange or yellowish flanks, and white underparts. It is recorded in sandy sites in the southern Sahel of Burkina Faso and Niger.
The back ranges from tan to light mahogany, the flanks are orange or yellowish beige, and the underparts, hands, and feet are white. The coat is described as woolly to the touch.
Around Mare d'Oursi in Burkina Faso, T. petteri was recorded on windblown sand patches and old dunes, while the sympatric T. gracilis used soils with little or no sand.
