The Common Black Hawk is a dark raptor that waits for prey in wooded wetlands and along streams. It is rare in the southwestern United States and more common from Mexico southward.
Adults have black plumage, a broad white band across the tail, and yellow bills and legs. Juveniles are browner and streaked.
It watches from trees overhanging water and drops quickly to catch prey such as fish and crayfish. Its diet also includes other small animals.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
