The Chilean Hawk is a raptor of forests in Chile and adjacent Andean areas. In northern Patagonia, one pair nested in the upper branches of Nothofagus trees over five breeding seasons.
Adults have dark upperparts, a pale breast and belly barred with grey, a banded grey tail, and rufous leg feathers. Juveniles are browner and more heavily streaked, so they look different from adults.
From 2001 to 2005, one pair in a northern Patagonian Nothofagus forest built stick platforms in forks near the trunks of living trees. Five nests were 16–20 m above ground; the study also recorded reuse of a nest and nesting tree.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
