The pouched gerbil is a small gerbil of the semi-arid Sahel. Its skull is smaller than that of a close relative, and it occurs in a region shaped by alternating dry and wet seasons.
A study comparing skulls found D. braueri’s cranium to be smaller and differently shaped than that of its close relative, the fat-tailed gerbil.
It inhabits semi-arid shrublands and savannas in the Sahel and Sudanian region. In this landscape, long dry and short wet seasons affect vegetation and resources.
