The Junin Grebe is a flightless grebe found only at Lake Junín in central Peru. It changes the parts of the lake it uses between the breeding season and the rest of the year.
The upperparts are gray, while the throat, neck, breast, and belly are white; the iris is red.
It cannot fly. During the breeding season it uses tall emergent vegetation near the shore; outside that season it moves to more open water.
At Lake Junín, it builds a concealed floating nest among tall emergent plants and lays up to 3 eggs.
At Lake Junín, it feeds mainly on small Orestias fish. When low water makes fish scarce, it also eats midges, aquatic bugs, small crustaceans, and other invertebrates.
Its bill is bluish gray, longer and thicker than that of the similar Silvery Grebe.
Young birds have a brownish tinge. Compared with the Silvery Grebe, it has a slimmer neck and darker flanks.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
