A shrike with a bold black face band and reddish-brown back that watches for prey from a perch.
Adults have a black band around the eyes, a gray head, a reddish-brown back, and white underparts. The sexes look alike; juveniles are duller overall and have fine streaking on the head.
In open places with shrubs or hedges, it dives from a branch or wire to catch insects and small vertebrates. It may impale prey on thorns.
