Aegialomys baroni is a rice rat recorded along the Pacific side from southern Ecuador to northern Peru. Coastal records span very dry areas to humid forest.
Its coat is long, dense, and soft. The back is yellowish cream lightly mixed with brown, while the underside is gray. The tail is longer than the head and body, bicolored above and below, and covered with long hairs.
Coastal records span extremely dry places to humid forest, including grassland, steppe, and coastal wetlands. In Ecuador, the species occurs in a transition zone between wetland forest and extremely dry areas.
