The Himalayan Buzzard is polymorphic, with substantial variation in plumage. Some birds are resident in the Himalaya, while records document southward movement in winter to north-east India and the Indian Peninsula.

It is diurnal and is associated with open habitats such as grassland. The identification paper reports resident birds in the Himalaya and birds moving south in winter.
