The Campbell Shag lives on Campbell Island and its adjacent coasts. Breeding adults are black and white, with a crest and reddish facial skin.
Breeding adults have black-and-white plumage, a black crest, and reddish-orange facial skin. Outside the breeding season adults lose the crest and their black plumage fades toward brown.
Foraging flocks fan out in a line on the sea surface, dip their heads into the water, and beat the surface with their wings. They jump into the air together before diving for small shoaling fish and marine invertebrates. They nest in sea caves and on rock ledges.
The iris is dark brown. There is a yellow line above the gape and a yellow spot below it that grades into red. Juveniles have dull brown plumage, dull purple-brown bare facial skin, and a dull yellow-orange throat pouch.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
