This finch lives in volcanic highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama. Its long upturned bill is distinctive, and it feeds on insects, seeds, and fruit in mountain forest and bamboo.
The bill is long and upturned, with a black upper mandible and yellow lower mandible. Males are slate gray with a paler belly; females are olive-brown above, with cinnamon wing-bars and a buff eyebrow.
It uses mountain rainforest, bamboo, and bushy pasture, feeding on insects and spiders as well as seeds, nectar, and berries.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
